On Saturday I had the privilege of documenting the nuptials of Derek and Michelle. The two married in a traditional Methodist ceremony at Coalbush UMC in Mishawaka. Even though the ceremony was traditional, the couple found ways to weave their personalities and hobbies into the entire day. From funky socks, to a funny personalized homily, and a Dr. Who Groom’s Cake, the couple continued to surprise their guests with unexpected bits of creativity.

I loved shooting this wedding, because Derek and Michelle are such warm, open, expressive people. I mentioned their vulnerability and expression when I shot their engagement session, and I can say that their wedding was more of the same. They were very present at their wedding and slowly soaked the day in. It was fun to watch them excitedly taking it all in.

Derek and Michelle chose to do most of their wedding work in-house. However, their DIY wedding looked anything but.

When Derek first saw Michelle he doubled over and made the cutest gasping noise. He was PUMPED to see his bride!!

When he saw the inscribed watch that Michelle got him as a wedding gift, he was even more delighted.

Derek’s socks had cats riding bikes on them. He was thrilled to show them off to anyone who noticed them.

After the photos were finished the couple hid away while the guests arrived, and then it was time for the big ceremony!

Michelle specifically requested an extra photo slot for more photos of just her and Derek, even though they’d done a first look and did photos before the ceremony. Of course, my answer to that request was an enthusiastic yes!! It worked out perfectly, because later in the day there was actually some useful shade behind the church where there was a gorgeous patch of June Lilies. These are some of my favorite photos of the day.

Then it was time for the reception! The couple did a dessert reception instead of a full meal and served more cake and pie than you see at a full-service bakery. It was a virtually bottomless buffet of delectable gluten and sugar. It was SO pretty!

Michelle’s cousin made a personalized Dr. Who Groom’s Cake for Derek. The light on the top even worked! Isn’t it amazing? I’ve seen a few episodes of Dr. Who so I thought it was pretty cool, but Derek carries a sonic screwdriver… so, he was over the moon about this cake!

Michelle had to spend quite a bit of time with her adoring fans. All of them were three feet and under. She was QUITE popular with the kids.
